Most surfaces look best with the Clear formulation of ProtectaClear. The clear formulation of is practically invisible on polished metal.  If you want a satin finish on unpainted metal, it is better to polish the metal to a satin finish and coat it with the regular ProtectaClear. ProtectaClear is not thick or plastic looking and is practically invisible when applied to metal.
There are times that you want to protect the surface but do not want any shine or a very slight shine. One example of this is the preservation of a patina or rust on the metal. The Satin formula reduces the sheen significantly. With the Satin, it is important to mix the coating thoroughly before every use as it will settle and if not mixed properly and may result in streaking.
